Some basic considerations are given when choosing whether to stay put at home for the duration of an emergency or whether it might be a better choice to evacuate.

It is suggested that backup resources be available for lighting, cooking, heating, and communications.

You will not be able to gather food from wild sources. In an extended disruption, wild game will be depleted quickly. Other sources of wild food are limited and insufficient in most geographical areas.

Be prepared to defend yourself. Looters could attempt to confiscate your vital supplies.

Think through the situations you need to prepare for. Accumulate the necessary supplies and equipment. Preferrably do a practice run, perhaps a week when you shut down the power and live as though the emergency were in progress.

There are at least two possible catastrophes producing long term disruption of the food supply or other hardships: a severe slow down of the economy or a shutdown of the power grid as a consequence of a large solar flare or act of terror. To better get through such events, seven areas of preparation are suggested.

1.) Food, store 3 months or more worth of food that you normally eat. It should be canned or dry so it will keep without refrigeration.

2.) Water, at least 20 gallons. And know how to get more.

3.) A backup way to heat your living space.

4.) Light - flashlights, candles, and kerosene lamps.

5.) Sanitation - perhaps a 5 gallon plastic bucket and washable wipe clothes.

6.) Medications - a stock of any needed medications.

7.) Safety. Be aware of possible acts of violence and threats to your security. Have a plan be deal with them.
